Oryx Energy Projects & Services of Qatar (Oryx) has signed an agreement with ABB, to creates ABB Oryx Motors & Generators Service LLC (ABB Oryx M&G), a joint venture between the two companies that will provide a wide range of electrical motor and generator services to customers with operations in the oil, gas, water and energy sectors in Qatar and the surrounding Gulf and sub-Saharan African regions.
The agreement, which is the result of two and half years’ detailed discussion and meticulous development, was signed and sealed on the 7th of July 2011 by Abdulla Ahmed Mannai, Chairman and Managing Director of Oryx, and Gus Abboud, Region Division Manager, ABB Discrete Automation and Motion, Middle East and Africa.
The new joint venture will be based at the recently opened Oryx Engineering Solutions Centre (OESC) within the Ras Laffan Industrial City.
This new purpose built facility – which has a built up area close to 10,500sqm of workshops, offices and training facilities – is fully equipped with all the machinery needed to service a wide range of electrical motors and generators, including those manufactured and distributed by ABB.
Speaking at the ceremony, Oryx’ Chairman and Managing Director, Abdulla Ahmed Mannai, said: “This agreement strengthens our position in the market by adding to our capabilities.”“ABB is a highly respected global technology company well known for its innovation and leading position in energy efficiency and industrial productivity.”
“Oryx is a local company with an enviable reputation – throughout the Gulf region – for the quality of our services and the way we do business. We are a customerfocused organization, committed to delivering world-class services that major on value creation. We also have a strong commitment to sustainability and to the best interests of the wider Qatari community.”“In working with ABB, our aim will be to provide our customers with electrical motor generators and motor repair and maintenance services that are second to none in the region.”
“We are determined that, through the quality of our services and the convenience of our location, we will be able to stem the tide of business that, until now, has been leaving Qatar. The faster turnaround times we will offer will be attractive to companies operating in and near the Ras Laffan Industrial City, and our proximity to the region’s many off-shore operations will reduce the risks associated with
transportation.”
Speaking for ABB, Gus Abboud said: “As a leader in power and automation technologies, our aim is to help our utility and industry customers improve their performance whilst reducing their impact on the environment.”
“Did you know that electric motors are the single biggest consumer of electricity? They account for about 45 percent of global electricity consumption. Motors and generators are at the heart of every day life and without them, many businesses would grind to a halt, therefore servicing this vital equipment is key to keeping the wheels of industry turning and keeping the lights on.”
ABB’s search for a joint venture partner began in 2007. Since then, Oryx has also been researching the market, looking for partners who could match their aims and ideals. The creation of ABB Oryx M&G is thus the culmination of several years’ exploration and examination of various options by both parties.
The full scope of the joint venture includes the repair, servicing, commissioning, installation and maintenance of all brands of electrical motors and generators, including those manufactured and distributed by ABB. The work will be carried out either at the new ABB Oryx M&G dedicated workshop in the OESC or remotely on site at the customers’ operational locations. The on-site field services will cover the commissioning and installation of motors and generators together with preventive maintenance backed by ABB’s Life Expectancy Analysis Program (LEAP). The offsite services offered will include preventative maintenance and the repair, refurbishment and upgrading of all brands of motors and generators.
The overall service provided by ABB Oryx M&G will extend to the sale and delivery of spare parts and maintenance kits for the 4,000-plus ABB electrical motors and generators that have been installed by companies operating within the State of Qatar and other countries in the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa.
