Cresent has launched a training scheme to equip workers in the Rumaila oilfield with skills to make their work environment a safer place. Hundreds of employees from Iraq have completed the WorkSafe course, to raise safety standards at the work place.
As part of the contract with Rumaila, some 750 Southern Oil Company employees will visit Edinburgh over a nine month period to receive training in WorkSafe Control of Work systems.
WorkSafe recently went live across Rumaila, the software allows staff to identify hazards and develop control to prevent harm to people, equipment or the environment. The system also enables them to gain an understanding of the importance of communication and pre-planning in controlling hazards.
Launched in 2009, WorkSafe is credited with enabling companies to make significant safety improvements within their facilities while reducing operating costs and eliminating unnecessary paperwork.
The software comes in both paper-based and electronic formats and uses a series of documented procedures to define responsibilities, processes and work controls. In addition to the WorkSafe software package, the contract with Rumaila involves all facets of Cresent’s other business offerings, including consultancy, project management, e-learning and classroom-based learning. WorkSafe has been translated into 10 different languages, and new packages using Arabic and Mandarin were developed specifically for the Rumaila project.
As well as training sessions in Scotland, Crescent provided train the trainer sessions to Rumaila staff who then went on to terrain others within their organisations. This work has been carried out at training centres in Turkey and Jordan.
Cresent managing director, Tracie Watson, says this is only the beginning in the learning process. “The training is only the start and a greater understanding and knowledge will be developed when employees begin to use the work safe system at each othe facilities across Rumaila,” she said.
“This is one of the most significant contracts that Cresent has delivered in its 30 year history. Although we have been operationally present in a number of locations in the Middle East for some time and sales of our products in this region have been incredibly strong, this is the first time that our products have been used in Iraq,” she adds.
