Saudi Aramco has celebrated multiple successes at the Oil & Gas Middle East Awards, held last night in Dubai, with the firm winning in the “Middle East Health & Safety Initiative of the Year” category, whilst one of the oil giant’s up and coming employees scooped the award for ‘Young Engineer of the Year’.

The “Health and Safety Initiative” award was received by Dr Fatma Duhailan and Samantha Horseman, for their roles in developing an interactive health and safety application which fully engages users in an all encompassing learning environment to simulate health, safety and wellness throughout the day. “It’s basically a day in the life of an upstream professional who took on all the health and safety aspects throughout his day,” Samantha Horseman said.

“A Day in the life of an Upstream Professional” is an avatarial based training program that is locally and culturally relevant to the Middle East. This HSE initiative has made a significant and positive contribution in the advancement of health and safety consciousness in the upstream industry, through the development of an experiential training program through gameification.

Abdalwahab H. Alghamdi, an engineer at Saudi Aramco’s advanced research centre, was awarded the “Young Engineer of the Year” trophy in the presence of senior regional oil industry figures, together with representatives from the Middle East’s technology, service and support companies, oilfield service providers and upstream engineering and project consultants.

Accepting the award on Alghamdi’s behalf, Dr K. Hemanthkumar, senior petroleum engineering consultant at Aramco, said: “Alghamdi is one of our most energetic employees and he goes beyond the call of duty and involves himself in many activities. One of these is with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), where he has held different positions and has been very active in promoting the organisation.

“He works at our advanced research centre where we are developing new technology for the company for exploration and production. He’s one of the young engineers on the team, and he seems to be moving up with great potential.”
Alghamdi was selected as a member of the 2011/2012 SPE Saudi Arabia Section Executive Board as Vice-Chair, and was also chairman of the 2012 Young Professionals Technical Symposium. He also won the 2011 SPE Young Professional Paper Contest in Denver for best paper written by a young professional in the Well Stimulation discipline.

The awards evening, organised by Oil & Gas Middle East and ArabianOilandGas.com, had its third outing last night at Dubai’s luxury Westin Hotel.

Awards were presented in thirteen categories, and Saudi Aramco celebrated alongside firms including Total, Shell and Schlumberger on the winners’ podium.
