Iran digs 5,500m of wells in new year’s first week

National Oil Drilling Company official says drilling of the first development well in South Azadegan oil field was completed in four days of the new year that started on March 20

Iran’s National Oil Drilling Company has drilled about 5,500m of oil wells in just one week since the breakout of the new Iranian year in March 20, a company official said.

According to the deputy of the company Hamidreza Khoshayand, the company managed to drill 5,448m of oil and gas wells in just one week.

He said 692m of the oil drilling operation was done during the first day of the new Iranian year which started March 20.

According to the official, the drilling of the first development well in South Azadegan oil field was completed in four days. He said the company used 75 rigs for its operations.

Earlier, a senior official with the National Iranian Drilling Company (NIDC) had said drilling operations at South Azadegan oilfield are 61% complete and will sum up by September 2016.

Mehran Makvandi, NIDC deputy managing director in drilling projects, told the Shana news agency that NIDC is currently involved in 14 major drilling projects in onshore and offshore fields which are all expected to come on-stream within the next two years.

NIDC is drilling 40 wells at South Azadegan which are 61% complete so far and will be fully operational by September, he said.

Drilling operations at 28 of the wells were stalled due to lack of equipment, but after sanctions’ removal operations are gaining momentum, Makvandi added.

NIDC had drilled over 113km at South Azadegan development project at the time.
