Saudi Aramco will raise Khurais oilfield’s production in the coming two months, Zawya reported that CEO and president Amin Nasser said on Tuesday.
The oilfield current produces 1.2 mn bpds, which would be raised to 1.5mn, Nasser reportedly said. Khurais field, located near the world’s largest oilfield, Ghawar, was first discovered in 1957, and initially produced 190,000 bpd of Arabian Light crude oil. That was increased to 300,000 bpd in 1982 after the addition of crude oil water content treatment facilities.
The field was shut down in 1993 because of low production volume, and went back into production in the 2000s with the Khurais field development program, which brought production up to 1.2 million bpd of crude oil. The giant field covers 1,200 square kilometres.
Saudi Aramco has made a push to redevelop many older fields in an attempt to increasing production output, including Safaniya, Marjan and Berri oilfields.
Nasser also reportedly said that Fadhili oilfield would be inaugurated in 2019.
