L&T secures contract for one of the largest clean energy projects

Upon completion, the hydro storage plant will be one of the largest clean energy projects of its kind in India

EPC giant L&T’s Heavy Civil Infrastructure business has secured an order from renewable Greenko group, for development of an off stream pumped storage project in Indian state Madhya Pradesh.

The civil and hydromechanical works of the project will be executed through a consortium led by L&T for a period of 30 months. Upon completion, the project will be one of the largest clean energy projects of its kind in India.

According to L&T, securing this pumped storage system order “reiterates its commitment to bolster India’s clean energy sector and a step forward towards the country’s goal of being carbon neutral.”

Pumped hydro storage plants that store energy using a system of two interconnected reservoirs have assumed immense significance today given the increased adoption of inherent variability. Water is pumped to the upper reservoir in times of surplus energy and, in times of excess demand, water from the upper reservoir is released, generating power, with an overall cycle efficiency of 80% or more.

L&T also has a significant presence in the Middle East region. At the end of 2021, L&T closed a giant deal worth $1.6 billion with Saudi Aramco for the giant Jafurah gas development. Moreover, oil giant Saudi Aramco signed EPC agreements with the Indian contractor in July 2022 for various onshore construction projects.
