With a striking increase in submissions this year, our judging panel had to scrutinise a competitive crop of candidate from across the upstream, midstream, downstream and utilities sectors. The shortlist represented some of the best in the industry, but ultimately, one winner and one highly commended nomination were chosen.
The winner of Utilities Project of the Year 2019:
Shuqaiq 3 Desalination Plant by the consortium of ACCIONA, Marubeni, ALJ and Al Rawafid, was awarded the Utilities Project of the Year award.
“This project in Saudi Arabia enables the consortium to provide more than two million people with water,” one judge said. “As part of the project’s social outreach measures, in the first few years of the operation and maintenance of the plant, the consortium will offer academic and practical training to the Saudi employees in order to nurture the development of water industry professionals in a region so much in need of projects of this kind.”
“We are betting on and really committed to the environment, because the seawater reverse osmosis technology used in the Shuqaiq 3 Desalination Plant is the most energy efficient per cubic metre of desalinated water, of all the technologies in the world,” said Jesús Sancho, ACCIONA’s managing director for the Middle East.
Highly commended for Utilities Project of the Year 2019:
The highly commended nominee in this category was Khan Younis Wastewater Treatment Plant by Eaton Corporation.
The jury panel this year, comprising six judges – Abhay Bhargava, director, industrial practice, MEA, Frost & Sullivan; Ali Al Janabi, UAE country chair, vice president, Shell Upstream, Shell Group of companies; Bart Cornelissen, energy, resources & industrials leader, Middle East, Deloitte Middle East; Joseph J Anis, president and CEO, power services and gas power systems, MENASA, GE Power; Nicholas Cochrane-Dyet, special advisor to the chief representative, BP Oil International; Vinod Raghothamarao, director, energy wide perspectives and strategy, IHS Markit EMEA– considered the merit of the nominees, and decided the winner and the ‘highly commended’.
