Major operators in the Middle East are refocussing their strategies towards the downstream industry. The recent announcements from Saudi Aramco and ADNOC, to mention few, planning huge investments in to the sector, stand as testimony to the new dynamism gathering around the downstream industry in the region.

Improved efficiency and rising demand for higher value downstream products have been driving plant integration and modernisation as well as investment in greenfield refining and petrochemical developments in the Middle East. These projects will help diversify the region’s economies, make them more competitive on the global market and create more jobs for the region’s young and growing populations. The ‘Downstream Project of the Year’ Award will aim to select the most outstanding, ambitious and game-changing project in the refining and petrochemicals industry in the Middle East.

The winner of the 2018 ‘Downstream Project of the Year’ Award was the Shah Plant Project by ADNOC Sour Gas in the UAE.

Shah plant is the largest project of its kind in the world. The plant receives one billion cubic feet per day of raw gas and produces half a billion cubic feet per day of sales gas, which is delivered to the network. The project produces 3.5 million tonnes of sulphur per year and is committed towards the highest standards of 100% HSE.

Winning this award is a great achievement for ADNOC Sour Gas because we have done lot of efforts in introducing this $10bn plant.Sudha Nakka Papisetty, team leader, HSE planning and performance, ADNOC Sour Gas, who received the ‘Downstream Project of the Year’ Award on behalf of ADNOC Sour Gas, said: “Winning this award is a great achievement for ADNOC Sour Gas because we have done lot of efforts in introducing this $10bn plant.”

The ‘highly commended’ nomination in this category is the Muscat-Sohar Products Pipeline and Al Jifnain Terminal Project by Orpic. With the new pipeline between Sohar and Jifnain, the need to transport the products by sea is eliminated, therefore saving $10mn per year, and the pipeline is a significantly more efficient and safer transportation media than the vessels.

Since 2010, the annual awards event hosted by Oil & Gas Middle East and Refining & Petrochemicals Middle East has featured categories across the oil and gas value chain. But this year the awards are bigger than ever with a rebrand to the Middle East Energy Awards, which for the first time includes renewable and alternative energy, through sister publication Utilities Middle East.

Nominations for the awards are now open, and the editors of all three hosting publications encourage nominations from every corner of the industry. With 16 categories, up from 10 in the 2018 edition of the awards, there is more room than ever to celebrate the wide scope of achievements from the individuals and organisations striving to innovate and change the energy sector.
