This year, the judging panel for the Oil & Gas Middle East and Refining & Petrochemicals Middle East Awards received a competitive crop of candidates for each of the 10 award categories. Each candidate was scrutinised until the judging panel was able to decide on a shortlist, and ultimately one winner and one ‘highly commended’ were chosen.

The winner of Operational Excellence Strategy of the Year 2018:

Saudi Aramco’s Yanbu NGL Fractionation Department (YNGLFD) achieved operational excellence by deploying the ‘Plan, Do, Check and Act’ – PDCA – approach based on the Deming’s concept, resulting in a robust operational excellence system, that is reflected in a structured framework comprising 13 elements and 37 processes targeted at meeting stakeholders’ expectations and contributing to the long-term organisational success.Rami R Shafiei, operational excellence team leader, YNGLFD, said: “Last year we were shortlisted; but this year, we made it!”

“The uniqueness of the Zero Ethane Flaring Project is that we have implemented the operational excellence approach based on the Deming’s cycle, the best practices from the European Foundation for Quality Management, and McKinsey studies.”

Highly commended for Operational Excellence Strategy of the Year 2018:

The ‘highly commended’ nomination in this category is On-the-job Training Strategy by Sadara Chemical Company. The company’s investment in this ambitious initiative was $200mn over the project phase and through commissioning and start-up.
