This year, the judging panel for the Oil & Gas Middle East and Refining & Petrochemicals Middle East Awards received a competitive crop of candidates for each of the 10 award categories. Each candidate was scrutinized until the judging panel was able to decide on a shortlist, and ultimately one winner and one highly commended nominee were chosen.

The winner of Young Oil & Gas Professional of the Year 2018:

Mohammed Al Ghazal, operations supervisor at Saudi Aramco, took home the award for Young Oil & Gas Professional of the Year 2018!

As operations supervisor for Saudi Aramco, Al Ghazal has worked on projects and research addressing open hole horizontal multistage technology, integrated cyber and physical security and downhole coring and corrosion and scale mitigation, among thers. He was praised by judges for “successfully lead[ing] the development and deployment of multiple cutting-edge initiatives, such as environment friendly well completion practices, proactive control of corrosion and scaling tendency in harsh operating environment, and cyber-secured logic control and information flow models.”

Highly commended for Young Oil & Gas Professional of the Year 2018:

Tariq Almubarak a research scientist at Saudi Aramco, is our highly commended Young Oil & Gas Professional of the Year 2018!

Almubarak has been with Aramco for six years, during which time he has worked as a gas reservoir engineer and as an instructor on formation damage and acidizing at Aramco’s Upstream Professional Development Centre.

One judge noted that: “His key achievement was the development of a scale-free, raw seawater-based fracturing fluid that is now applied in conventional and unconventional wells in Saudi Arabia. Utilising seawater as the main water source in hydraulic fracturing applications saves cost and preserves water for future generations.”
