The Maysan Oil Company has completed the drilling of the first multilateral well in Iraq.
The well is operated by China National Petroleum Company (CNPC) and is located in the Halfaya oil field.
Mr. Ali M. Swaydig, director general of MOC, said that the time & cost in the drilling process are necessary to raise the production and noted that the international oil companies have started to depend on the new multilateral drilling technology.
He also added that Daijen and Bohai, the two subcontracted Chinese companies for CNPC, finished the drilling of three wells which will be connected to the production system after completion, along with another six wells that are currently being drilled.
The Halfaya oil field produces approximately 110,000 bpd, of which 106,000 is exported via the ports in Basra. This is expected to increase to 535,000 bpd with large quantities of gas production by 2017 following the completion of the contract items. The field contains 8 explored reservoirs related to MOC with a reserve of approximately 16 billion barrels.
