An Iraqi oilfield with estimated reserves of 4.3 billion barrels is due to begin production this weekend according to news agency AFP.

The chief engineer said that the field, near the city of Nasiriyah in Southern Iraq will produce between 10,000-15,000 barrels per day (bpd). 

“We carried out tests today, and actual production will start over the next two days,” AFP reported Karim Yassir as saying.

Yassir also said that the oil be transferred to Basra via pipeline and that 15 more wells are planned in addition to the current five. Once they are in place it is hoped the field will increase production to 50,000 bpd. 

The Southern Oil Company, an Iraqi state-owned operation operates the field.
