More fire safety training demanded

Fire safety expert calls for more training for oil and gas workers

A fire safety expert has called for more equipment training to be carried out in the Middle East oil and gas sector.

Last week a worker was killed at the Doura refinery in Baghdad after a fire broke out, and experts have now called for more focus on fire safety.

“[Firms in the Middle East] do tend to buy the equipment, but then very little training is done after that. Especially when you are using the water to keep a structure cool when the fire is in place, it needs training to get the most out of the equipment,” reported Richard Lucas of CounterFire.

“We do the whole system design, we will select the correct gearboxes, the pumps, the valves, do the water deluge system for the boat, commission the system and if asked we can also give training to the ship crews,” he added.

“Normally the shipyards are in such a panic to get things commissioned and the boat delivered, that part of it very rarely happens.”
