The port of Boston in the US will receive its first shipment of Yemeni liquefied natural gas this month amid concerns from local officials that the huge vessels carrying the gas will become a target for terrorist attacks.
Bloomberg reported that the first vessel has received clearance to pass through Boston Harbour and into the LNG terminal operated by GDF Suez.
“Because we had elevated concern, we found the vulnerabilities and we established a level of security to ensure the ship remains safe,” Lieutenant Erik Halvorson, a Coast Guard spokesman, is reported by Bloomberg as saying.
Due to security concerns any LNG tanker from Yemen will be subject to checks at both US and Yemeni ports.
