A joint venture between the state-owned hydrocarbons giant Saudi Aramco and Anglo-Dutch supermajor Shell has announced that they have made a significant gas find after five years of exploration in the vast Empty Quarter of the KSA.
News agency Reuters reported that South Rub al-Khali Co (SRAK) has found gas in two zones that flowed at a combined rate of 90 million cubic feet per day (cfpd) at Kidan-6, the company’s fourth exploration well.
“One zone was flowed at a rate of 50 million cubi feet per day of gas while the other zone was flowed at 40 million cubic feet of gas per day,” Reuters reported a spokesman from SRAK as saying.
The gas tested “is sour … (with) 10-25 barrels of condensate liquids (per one million cubic feet of gas)”.
Sour gas is traditionally more expensive to process due to it containing hydrogen sulphide.
The news of the find will be welcome in Saudi Arabia as the country has stepped up its efforts to increase its gas capacity to service the ever-growing domestic demand. The gas will be used in the country’s booming petrochemicals and utilities sectors.
SRAK still have three more wells to drill as part of the seven well deal it signed in 2004.
