Kuwait has summoned Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Kuwait, Sayed Shihabi, over recent remarks on Iran’s plan to produce oil at the continental shelf.
Kuwait News Agency  has reported today that the Undersecretary of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs Khalid Al-Jarallah presented a protest to the Iranian diplomat after the managing director of National Iranian Continental Shelf Oil Company (NICSOC) unveiled an Iranian plan to produce oil at the continental shelf area in a unilateral manner unless a relevant agreement was reached with Kuwait.
During the meeting, the Kuwaiti official said the disputed area is subject to bilateral negotiations for final demarcation, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a release.
Both sides should not act unilaterally at the area until it is finally delineated, Al-Jarallah said.
Iran has been antagonising its neighbours in the Gulf with 10-day long war games at sea, including missile testing, and repeated rhetoric on the “ease with which it could close the Straits of Hormuz”. While it remains highly unlikely the Islamic Republic would take such drastic action, its rhetoric has helped send oil prices to an eight-month high.
