The Iranian oil minister has said that the country is looking to export natural gas to developed markets in Europe via a pipeline running through Iraq and Syria.
Speaking in Damascus, Gholamhossein Nozari said that Iran was eager to expand its export regime and suggested the gas would travel though the planned 2100-mile Persian Pipeline.
“Iran will transfer gas to Greece and Italy through Iraq, Syria and the Mediterranean Sea,” the minister said.
Nozari also said that his country’s plans would be likely to receive opposition from the United States.
Iran holds the second-largest reserve volume of natural gas in the world – about 948 trillion cubic feet.
