ABB has won a US$400 million contract in Kuwait to design, supply, install, test and commission three new substations.

The three substations will increase transmission voltage from 300kV to 400kV, allowing Kuwait’s grid to be connected up with neighbouring GCC countries which already operate at 400kV.

“These substations will reinforce the transmission network and boost capacity in Kuwait, to help meet the region’s growing demand, increase energy efficiency and improve the quality of power,” commented ABB head of power systems division Peter Leupp.

The substations will feature gas-insulated switchgear, 12 power transformers, low voltage auxiliary systems and network protection and control equipment. It is hoped that the project will be completed in 2011.

As part of the GCC initiative to interlink the power of Gulf states, ABB also built the first substation operating at 400kV in Kuwait.
