Mott MacDonald has been appointed by Qaiwan Group to provide engineering, procurement and construction management services for the new Xarajyan oil terminal in Kurdistan, Iraq.

Scheduled to be completed by the second quarter of 2018, the facility will handle petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, aviation turbine fuel, kerosene, fuel oil and liquefied petroleum gas.

Mott MacDonald will design the first phase of the 140,800m3 storage terminal, auxiliary utilities and infrastructure facilities at Xarajyan. The consultancy will also provide interface and procurement engineering services and will assist with pre-fabrication, construction and assembly engineering. Construction management will be delivered through a separate contract.

Qaiwan Group is 2000-strong privately-owned company headquartered in Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan. The Group’s Bazian refinery is one of the largest oil refineries in Iraqi Kurdistan, with a capacity of 40,000 barrels per day. Its 442MW power plant is a major contributor to domestic power needs.

Albert Allan, managing director of Mott MacDonald’s oil and gas business, said, “The new Xarajyan oil terminal will provide much needed storage capacity for petroleum products, help meet local demand and potentially support the transfer of products to Turkey.”
