Siemens to show digital future experience at WFES

Showcasing solutions that empower energy industries in the Middle East, Siemens will give WFES visitors the chance to experience innovative digital solutions to achieve efficiency, productivity and reliability gains.

A glimpse into the digital future will be demonstrated by Siemens through interactive displays from the company’s technology portfolio at the 10th edition of the World Future Energy Summit (WFES), part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

Siemens will showcase its digital capabilities through the micro-grid table and various augmented reality displays. WFES will be held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC) during 16-19 January.

WFES visitors will have the chance to experience innovative digital solutions from Siemens, aimed at empowering energy industries to achieve efficiency, productivity and reliability gains. Without sacrificing grid stability, the micro-grid table enables visitors to digitally model an energy system that integrates power generated from renewables and traditional sources of energy. In today’s energy mix, maintaining stability is increasingly important, which features a growing share of renewables and where it is often necessary to compensate for fluctuations in power supply.

Siemens executives will be participating in panel discussions around different topics during the annual conference. Dietmar Siersdorfer, CEO, Siemens Middle East, will shed light on the company’s de-carbonisation strategy during a panel on 17 January entitled ‘Effective government and business strategies for implementing the Paris Climate Agreement’. The company was one of the first major industrial organisations that pledged to achieve a net-zero carbon footprint by 2030, while halving it by 2020.

Thomas Fuchs, senior expert and project leader, energy solutions (R&D), Siemens AG, will partake in the ‘GCC water and wastewater strategies’ panel discussion on the same day, highlighting innovative thermal water treatment solutions. The transformation of distribution grids caused by integrating renewable sources of energy during the ‘Planning for energy security’ panel on 18 January will be addressed by Stefan Niessen, technology field leader, Siemens. A ‘techtalk’ on the increasing importance of hydrogen as a large-scale solution for energy storage will be delivered by Manfred Waidhas, head of technology @Innovation (hydrogen storage), Siemens.

Siemens is focusing on four different levers to achieve its de-carbonisation plan: energy efficiency, decentralised energy systems, intelligent e-mobility solutions and the purchasing of clean electricity. In improving the energy efficiency of its own buildings and production facilities, Siemens invested €100 million with expected annual savings of about €20 million from 2020 onwards. The company is already making significant advances in reducing its CO2 footprint, one year after the launch of its CO2-neutral programme. Siemens was able to cut its CO2 emissions from 2.2 million tons in fiscal 2014 to 1.7 million tons in fiscal 2016.

A long-term technology partner to the Middle East region, Siemens turbines account for 40 percent of the power generation capacity in the UAE. The company has been supplying Dubai with power solutions since 1992, including technology for the protection and automation of its power infrastructure for the digital age.
