Production at the Shah natural gas field in Abu Dhabi could begin as early as next week, according to an industry source.

The field has total proven reserves of around 17 trillion cubic feet, and is slated to produce around 1 billion cubic feet per day.

“The Shah gas field is going to produce first gas imminently,” the source told ArabianOilandGas.com.

“It will be weeks rather than months, and could even be as soon as next week.”

There are a number of other natural gas fields being developed in the GCC currently, including the Bab gas field in the southwest of the United Arab Emirates.

“The Shah gas field is hugely important and I think it will become the benchmark that other gas projects in the region will have to meet,” the source added.

In an interview with The National newspaper earlier this week, Suhail Al Muzrouei, the UAE’s Energy Minister, said commissioning on the Shah gas field has started and was ”progressing well”, but did not specify when first gas would be produced.

He added that the Bab sour gas field would start producing gas “in the next two years”.
