Chevron announces Qatar research plans

US-based oil company to partner QSTP as part of US$20m project

Chevron Corporation has announced plans to establish a renewable power and energy efficiency centre in Qatar. The    world’s fourth largest non-government energy company will partner with the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) as part of the US$20 million project.

It is hoped that the Centre for Sustainable Energy Efficiency will conduct research into renewable power such as solar and train Qatari engineers in energy efficiency solutions.

“We can identify specific energy technologies that work well in the region’s desert climate and develop capabilities within the country that ultimately will benefit Qatar and the entire region,” Chevron vice chairman Peter Robertson said.

The centre will be supported by Chevron’s technology companies, including Chevron Energy Solutions, which have also been involved in a similar project at the University of California, the state in the US where the company is based.

H.E. Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah, Qatar Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Industry said: “Establishment of this centre greatly enhances our ability to utilise Chevron’s expertise and leadership in the area of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies in the future, and for training Qatari engineers and scientists.”
