Shell to buy more power from world’s largest offshore wind farm

The 15-year agreement will see Shell responsible for 240 megawatts of installed generation capacity across the Dogger Bank C site off the coast of the UK.

Oil giant Shell has agreed to purchase energy from the world’s largest offshore wind farm on Wednesday.

The 15-year agreement will see Shell responsible for 240 megawatts of installed generation capacity across the Dogger Bank C site off the coast of the UK.

Centrica Energy Marketing and Trading, and SSE Energy Supply will also be responsible for a further 240 megawatts each, while Danske Commodities will be responsible for 480 megawatts.

“Offshore wind is playing an increasingly important role in supplying the UK with low-carbon electricity. This agreement expands our portfolio of clean power and increases to 720 megawatts our combined offtake from Dogger Bank, one of the most ambitious renewable power projects in the world,” David Wells, vice president of Shell Energy Europe said in a statement.

The 3.6 gigawatt Dogger Bank Wind Farm in the North Sea is being constructed over 130 kilometres off the north-east coast of England, where higher and more consistent wind speeds are found compared to near the shore.

“Today we’re celebrating yet another important milestone in the delivery of the world’s largest offshore wind farm. Concluding offtake Power Purchase Agreements with some of the leading energy trading companies for Dogger Bank C means we are well on track to reach financial close for the third phase of Dogger Bank Wind Farm by the end of the year,” Steve Wilson, Dogger Bank Wind Farm’s Project Director at SSE Renewables commented.

Due to the size of the development it is being built in three 1.2 gigawatt phases – Dogger Bank A, Dogger Bank B, and Dogger Bank C. All together the project is expected to produce enough renewable electricity to supply five percent of UK demand alone – equivalent to powering six million UK homes.

Once all three phases are completed, Dogger Bank will be the largest offshore wind farm in the world. Construction is expected to complete by March 2026.
