The General Electricity Company of Libya has signed up Doosan Heavy Industries to provide boilers for two oil-fired thermal power plants under construction in Al Khalij and western Tripoli.

Doosan will supply four 350 MW boilers to each of the facilities. The combined value of the contracts is US $530 million.

The Tripoli West power plant is being built on a site 20 km west of Tripoli, while the Al Khalij facility is located near Surt, Libya’s administrative capital.

In October, Hyundai Engineering and Construction (HDEC) said it had won the US $1.36 billion order to build the plants, which will have a joint capacity of 2,800 MW of electricity. The total construction period is 52 months.

HDEC was also awarded a US $710 million contract to build the power generation facility for the new Shuaiba North power and desalination plant in Kuwait, in July last year.

The combined-cycle thermal power plant is expected to be able to produce 860,000 KW of power per day. The total construction period is 30 months. The main contractor for that project is Mitsui.
