The contract to develop the Gharraf oilfield in southern Iraq has been signed by the successful consortium in the Gulf state.

The consortium is headed by Malyasian oil giant Petronas and includes the Japanese company Japex.

Gharraf holds reserves of 863 million barrels and the consortium is hoping it will yield 230,000 barrels of oil per day.
