Atlas Copco Portable Energy has recorded a 70 percent increase in its portable used equipment business for 2013.
This growth has been supported by the robust expansion of the Used Equipment Competence Center in Poland and the establishment of regional representation in the US. To meet demand for its premium and certified compressors and generators in 2014, Atlas Copco Portable Energy is actively developing trade-in from rental companies.
Two years ago, Atlas Copco launched its Used Equipment business dedicated to selling premium and certified Atlas Copco portable compressors and generators. In this time, the business has grown significantly. In 2013, the branch recorded a growth of 70 percent.
The development of the Atlas Copco Portable Energy Used Equipment business is supported by its Used Equipment Competence Center in Katowice, Poland. The Atlas Copco facility coordinates and manages all refurbishment activities for Europe, which were expanded to include cleaning and painting in 2013. Furthermore, Atlas Copco Used Equipment strengthened its global reach by establishing dedicated representation in the US in June 2013 and Northern Africa in the first quarter of 2014.
The market for used equipment is significant as construction equipment typically has a second and third life. Before Atlas Copco focused on the Used Equipment market, almost all used portable machines were sold ‘as is’, including potential issues related to their performance and reliability.
“As a leading manufacturer, we consider it our responsibility to offer sustainable productivity of our equipment as it starts its second and third life. No other party is better placed to ensure the quality of our used machines than we are,” says Dominic Fancini, Atlas Copco Portable Energy Used Equipment Sales Manager. “As an added benefit to our customers, we also offer simplified purchase and sales tools in a market historically fragmented between brokers, auctioneers and other third parties.”
With refurbished and certified used compressors and generators, Atlas Copco is offering a new type of product in a what used to be an ‘as is’ market. These Atlas Copco compressors are of particular interest to customers looking for high-quality used equipment as well as customers that might otherwise buy a non-premium new compressor.
As the demand for Atlas Copco’s premium certified compressors and generators continues to grow, the company is looking to work with rental companies in 2014. “Historically, we have had a strong relationship with rental companies as our customers,” continues Fancini. “We look forward to strengthening those relationships on the supply side as well. We want to be their preferred partner for their used equipment.”
