Omani oil and gas unions are planning to strike, according to a report from Gulf News.
The action, which would contravene Omani’s Ministerial Decree No 575/2013, is being planned in response to widespread job losses that have taken place amidst ongoing oil-price stagnation.
Saud Al Salmi, chairman of the oil and gas sector labour union, told Gulf News that the strike will begin on 18 November, 2015 – Oman’s National Day. He said that the withdrawal of labour will continue until authorities in the Sultanate meet the demands of Omani workers by ending the layoffs.
According to the newspaper, Al Salmi said: “We aim to go on strike to [persuade] the Omani authorities to find solution for such frightening layoffs of more than 1,300 Omani nationals working in the oil and gas sector.”
The union chief does not know exactly how many people are likely to strike. He also emphasised that oil and gas workers are not working against Oman’s government, but are looking for “very urgent solutions”.
