Focusing on this month’s magazine, the cover story elaborates on a novel technology, which provides onsite analysis of difficult-to-detect chemicals, such as corrosion inhibitors. Corrosion is a naturally occurring phenomenon defined as the deterioration of a material because of its reaction with the surroundings. Corrosion has the potential to damage critical assets – from pipelines in the oil and gas sector to water and wastewater systems in the process industry.Â
Industries do not give much attention to corrosion except in high-risk segments. The annual total cost of corrosion globally is estimated at US$2.2 trillion. There are established and innovative approaches to control and prevent corrosion. The downstream industry should take advantage of these solutions, thereby reducing or eliminating the catastrophic impact of corrosion on the environment, public safety, and the economy.
