Al Hosn Gas’ Shah project takes EPC spoils

Abu Dhabi mega project beat off stiff competition

Al Hosn Gas was presented with one of the most significant awards of the night, winning the EPC Project of the Year for the Shah Gas Project.

“It’s very pleasing because of the level of effort Al Hosn has put into the project. It’s very satisfactory, and we’ve moved from the construction phase where we’ve had 40,000 people on the project to 1,400 people who are working on what is a highly technical plant,” said Patricio V. Rivera, VP for HSE at Al Hosn Gas.

“I think it has won because of the magnitude of challenges that you have to face when you work on a sour gas field. The field was discovered in the 1960s, so we’ve had to wait decades for the technology to be developed.

“Al Hosn has been able to develop the project as we cover the upstream and downstream, and I think that will have helped the judges make their decisions.”

The winning entry was marked out as highly complex, as well as being the biggest project of its kind globally.

One judge said: “This is an innovative project, which is both large in scale as well as being delivered on time to the expected production levels.

Another said: “The project shows excellent attention to social issues. Self-supporting design, including housing, medical, recreation and a mosque, [to] provide a high quality of life.”

The Highly Commended honour went to Saudi Aramco’s Offshore Gas Mega-Project.

One judge described the Highly Commended entry as a: “a mega-project depicting pioneering ideas in using giant jack-up rigs, big bore drilling, and completion technology to successfully produce the fields at very high rates.”
