Downhole technology company Peak Well Systems has announced the commissioning of two new test facilities for its downhole plug systems.

The new ISO-accredited test facilities have been commissioned in Perth, Western Australia, and Aberdeen, UK, as part of the company’s R&D strategy.

Peak said in a statement its new facilities will “provide a controlled environment in which to test downhole plug systems under extreme conditions for prolonged periods of time”.

“Both sites have refrigeration capabilities essential for rapid temperature cycling, thus simulating the most hostile of thermal conditions,” it added.

The company said it successfully performed inaugural tests in Perth last month and witnessed by third party certifying authority, Det Norske Veritas.

The test facility in Aberdeen is due to open on the first of January next year.

Amongst the first products being tested in the new facilities are Peak’s recently launched V3-rated SIMPLUS products- plug systems certified to withstand high pressure fluid and temperature cycling conditions.

Peak said its SIMPLUS line has already seen significant uptake from operators in the Middle East.

The company has established presence throughout the Middle East working with service and oil companies.

Its SIM Plug Systems have been used for well integrity and data acquisition applications in the Middle East.
Earlier this year the company acquired an exclusive licence for V0-rated MetaPlex sealing technology.

Testing of its upcoming V0-rated product range includes high pressure and temperature cycling conditions in gaseous environments.

Robin McGowan, chief technology officer at Peak Well Systems, said: “Peak has committed to extending the operating envelope for plug systems that are vital within our industry.

“As wells become more challenging, HPHT conditions and increased gas production limit the capabilities of existing technologies. To address this, Peak is developing new products that will effectively increase the operating window and improve both the life and the productivity of our customers’ wells.”

He added, “Our new test facilities in Perth and Aberdeen are a key part of the process and have been designed to test new products exposed to the most challenging conditions possible.”
