Safety first as Qatar looks to the future

Safety record will be key to Qatar’s future growth

Qatar’s Minister of Energy and Industry, HE Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada, believes that Qatar’s safety record is key to the country’s oil & gas business, according to Gulf news agency The Peninsula.

Speaking at the 2nd Operational Safety Challenges Forum for the Oil & Gas Industry, Al-Sada said that the country’s safety record would provide the solid foundations required for future growth.

“It is crucial to work for and enhance a safety culture that will constitute the backbone of all our operations – be they offshore or onshore, upstream or downstream. A consistent safety and operations culture among all workers, in all organisations in this vital industry, is a precondition to success. This principle is the driving force behind Qatar’s multi-faceted approach to safety. This is why we implement and promote the strictest adherence to the highest international safety regulations and standards in all aspects of our industry,” he said.

The forum has brought together representatives from all of the major oil & gas companies operating in Qatar.

In his welcoming speech, Ahmad Saif Al Sulaiti, operations manager for Dukhan Fields, said that he hoped the forum would help to raise awareness of safety issues within the industry.

“This forum provides an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience on a safety culture, crisis management and emergency response, personal safety, hazards and reducing risks at our facilities and it will help identify the way forward to promote the same in other organisations,” he said.
The three day event, which is scheduled until 16 January, consists of plenary sessions and presentations, focusing on promoting a safety culture, emergency response and effective crisis management.

The speakers on the first day included representatives from Total E&P Qatar, RasGas, Qatargas and Qatar Fuel Additives Company.
