Mott MacDonald has been appointed by Petredec (Mauritius) Ltd as technical adviser for the construction of a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) import/export terminal with a 15,000 tonne storage facility in Port Louis, Mauritius.
Mott MacDonald will provide technical and commercial due diligence for the project which will see the installation of LPG storage vessels believed to be the largest of their kind for mounded storage.
The 55 metre long, 15.5 metre diameter vessels will be fabricated in Europe and shipped to Mauritius where they will be lifted onto the foundation using heavy lift technology. A mound will be built over the four new vessels (approximately 19 metres high, 90 metres in length and between 75 and 85 metres wide) and will offer greater safety levels by protecting the vessels in the event of an external fire. The mound is also to be constructed so that any gas release or blast overpressure will be directed out to sea, away from the rest of the terminal.
The terminal will have a design life of 30 years, but with appropriate maintenance and operation will last much longer than that, Mott MacDonald claimed.
The construction of this terminal would allow the decommissioning and removal of existing above ground storage vessels situated elsewhere in the Port.
LPG export/import pipelines will also be installed and a control and administration building is to be constructed, containing plant, staff offices and welfare facilities. New access roads with parking areas, services, storm water drainage, and foul effluent collection will also be installed.

The project is expected to be completed in mid 2012.
