With a striking increase in submissions this year, our judging panel had to scrutinise a competitive crop of candidate from across the upstream, midstream, downstream and utilities sectors. The shortlist represented some of the best in the industry, but ultimately, one winner and one highly commended nomination were chosen.
The winner of Downstream Project of the Year 2019:
Project Stretch by ADNOC, was awarded the Downstream Project of the Year award. It won because “it will result in the establishment of a global trading platform and will be one of the largest ever refinery partnership transactions worldwide. The global trading platform will enable the company to develop systems with ability to access high-growth markets and reach end consumers directly.”
The past ten years had been remarkable in the progress of the Middle East refining and petrochemicals industry, with the implementation of landmark projects.
“We’re very pleased to win the downstream award, winning the award represents how downstream is really important for ADNOC in the coming years,” said Hassan Al Hosani, vice president of refining business at ADNOC’s downstream directorate. “Downstream is the main business, after exploration and production we need to stretch the barrel, and that’s what the main objective of the downstream. Winning this prize represents how important it is for us, and how we are moving ahead with these projects.”
The industry’s strategic actions today will define its position in the global downstream landscape during the next decade.

The highly commended nomination in this category is Duqm Refinery Project by Duqm Refinery and Petrochemical Industries Company
The jury panel this year, comprising six judges – Abhay Bhargava, director, industrial practice, MEA, Frost & Sullivan; Ali Al Janabi, UAE country chair, vice president, Shell Upstream, Shell Group of companies; Bart Cornelissen, energy, resources & industrials leader, Middle East, Deloitte Middle East; Joseph J Anis, president and CEO, power services and gas power systems, MENASA, GE Power; Nicholas Cochrane-Dyet, special advisor to the chief representative, BP Oil International; Vinod Raghothamarao, director, energy wide perspectives and strategy, IHS Markit EMEA– considered the merit of the nominees, and decided the winner and the ‘highly commended’.
