Iran has broken the uranium enrichment limits which were agreed in the 2015 nuclear deal, saying that Europe has failed to meet its obligations as part of the deal.Â
After the US left the deal in 2018 and reimposed sanctions on Iran, most notably on its oil sector, oil exports from the nation have crashed by almost 90%, according to data from Refinitiv Eikon.
Iran demanded that European leaders provide economic relief, one of the main benefits that the deal held for the nation, and set a July 7 deadline. Following that deadline, Ali Rabiee, the government’s spokesperson, said on Sunday that Iran will purify uranium past the 3.67% limit set in the 2015 deal. Â
While European leaders have said they would not immediately penalise Iran, it is unclear how they might retaliate in the long term, as US President Donald Trump continues to apply economic pressure on the nation and as tensions have flared in the region following attacks on tankers in the region and oil pumps in Saudi Arabia.
