Militants seize key Libyan oil fields

Mabruk is one of Libya's largest oil fields

Militants have seized two oil fields in central Libya, according to the BBC, the country descends further into chaos.

Security forces who were guarding the Bahi and Mabruk sites were forced to retreat after running out of ammunition.
Mabruk is one of the coutry’s largest oil fields and is situated about 500km east of Tripoli.

The field had been closed in recent months due to the threat of violence and a slow-down of exports.

“Extremists took control of the Bahi and Mabruk fields and are now heading to seize the Dahra field following the retreat of the forces guarding these sites,” Colonel Ali al-Hassi, a spokesman for the oil industry security service, told the BBC.

A gun attack on Mabruk in February left 11 people dead.
