Oman extends expat visa ban on four jobs

Oman’s Ministry of Manpower has extended a temporary ban on allowing expats to take on jobs in carpentry, metallurgy, blacksmithing and brick making, Oil & Gas Middle East’s sister title Arabian Business reports.

The ban will be extended for six months starting 3 July. The ban was initially put in place at the end of January 2018, banning the issuance of expat visas for 87 professions in ten sectors, including engineering, information systems and some technical professions.

The ban does not include companies that are registered with the Public Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development, and insured with the Public Authority for Social Insurance, Arabian Business reports.

This is part of the nation’s wider Omanisation iniative, which seeks to drive more locals into the workforce.
