Keppel Offshore & Marine has confirmed a disaster at one of its Philippines shipyards has resulted in six fatalities.

At around 10.20am on October 7 tragedy struck at the Keppel Subic Shipyard at a dock where a vessel was being repaired.

A stern ramp fell on a scaffolding underneath a ramp where the workers were working. As a result, five of the workers died immediately while seven were injured.

Since the initial announcement one of the seven injured workers has also passed away at a medical centre in Olongapo City.

The victims have been named as Cris Xander Papna, Jhay Lord Reyes, Glenn Miranda and Ronaldo Bagay, all project employees of Keppel Subic Shipyard (KSS), and Mark San Juan and Ronald Lara, who were from Garcia & Rocafor General Services (G&R), the yard’s subcontractor.

The surviving injured workers are in hospital.

“We would like to offer our sincere condolences once again to the families of the victims and are extending the necessary funeral and financial assistance to the victims and their families,” said Mok Kim Whang, President and General Manager, Keppel Subic Shipyard.

A taskforce comprising senior management from KSS and headquarters from Singapore has been formed to look into further enhancing safety at the yard.

The investigation is on-going, and Keppel management have said it will cooperate fully with the authorities in the Philippines.
