Fire broke out at Iran’s South Pars gas field's phases 17 and 18

A huge fire broke out at one of the gable frames of Iran’s South Pars gas field’s phases 17 and 18 in the early hours of Sunday morning, Iran’s ILNA News Agency has reported.

The cause of the accident has been identified as an electrical malfunction according to the agency.

No casualties have been reported but huge financial losses have been inflicted. 

Firefighters managed to put out the flames after four hours.

South Pars is part of a the world’s largest gas field covering an area of 9,700km2, 3,700km2 of which belong to Iran.

The remaining land of 6,000km2, is known as the North Dome and is situated in Qatar’s territorial waters of the Persian Gulf.

The phases 17 and 18 with more than 82% completion are expected to be commissioned next year.
